Before founding ARS in 1971, Dean Daughtry played keyboards in the band’s Classics IV and The Candymen, the latter of which had hits with “Georgia Pines” and “Ways” in 1967 and 1968, respectively, and frequently acted as Roy Orbison’s backing band. He remained the group’s lone constant member until retiring in 2020.

Daughtry, former Classics IV member J.R. Cobb Jr., and fellow Candymen members Rodney Justo, Barry Bailey, and Robert Nix together with journeyman bassist Paul Goddard founded ARS in the Doraville area of Atlanta.
