Lemon Richardson was born to Katherine Marie (Bouligney) and Wilmon Lee Richardson on March 1, 1966, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father was a distinguished lawyer who helped bring up a case that ended segregation in Baton Rouge’s public transit systems. At the age of five, Lemon learned that his biological father was Wilmon, despite having been born with the surname of his mother’s then-husband.

His maternal grandmother was the daughter of a black woman and a white father of French and Scots-Irish descent, therefore he has African-American and Creole ancestry. Located in Baker, East Baton Rouge Parish, Baker High School was his public secondary institution of choice. In his senior year, Lemon won the election as president of his class.
